Homeschool Programs at Khan Academy

The Khan Academy provides free courses and lessons online, covering a huge range of core school subjects and topics.

Some parents wonder whether the Khan Academy can be a useful and valuable resource to use for home education.

After all, why reinvent the wheel if someone has done the hard work and designed some of the learning resources that could be of great benefit to your homeschooled child.

Although there are now dozens of online learning and course providers, Khan is particularly attractive to homeschool parents because it covers all the traditional school subjects and is suitable for students of all ages.

Khan also includes content that covers test preparation. So if you live in a state that requires testing for homeschool students (and most of the easiest states to homeschool in do not have this testing requirement), Khan can be a bit of a lifesaver in getting your child well prepared for tests with appropriate, relevant and up to date material.

How exactly can the Khan Academy help with homeschooling?

I like how the Khan Academy is not just about learning one short course and then moving on. It can be thought of as an online school, and their goal is to provide free education to anyone, anywhere in the world.

For us homeschoolers, the best features of Khan include:

Learn at your own pace

Homeschooling is all about setting your own pace and schedule, and this is supported with Khan Academy because there’s no deadlines or anything like that. This is not like doing a university course online where you might have to meet a deadline or exam timetable. Homeschooling fully or partially through the Khan Academy lets home educators like us fit the learning into our schedule.
